paramount-styles-setlistHere’s last night’s setlist. He played the whole album and it lasted about an hour. I’ll type out the full name of the songs in case you don’t have the CD.

One Last Surprise

I knew last night was going to be late. It always is with me, isn’t it? Brian picked me up at about 9:30 at the ferry so that we could be to the venue around 10. When we arrived stage times showed that the second band should be starting in the next few minutes with Paramount Styles on at 11. I have to admit, I was pretty excited as I started to believe I could catch the 12:15 ferry out of Seattle. I prefer catching that ferry as the 1:35 ferry is just way too late for my aging body.

My hopes of catching the 12:15 ferry were soon erased by the second band starting late and playing a surprising and way too long 50 minutes. I don’t know who Robert Roth is, but I will make sure not to catch him next time. I’m not sure why he felt the need to have his band play so long. I really don’t know, but it was too long and not my cup of tea. Sure they were good musicians, but nothing special with originality.

It’s about 11:35 and the band is still setting up. By this time, I don’t mind that it is taking so long. I’m not catching the 12:15, so I decided to completely enjoy the set and not worry about whether or not I can catch the ferry. I have to admit that I expected more people to be at the venue especially since Girls Against Boys was a fairly popular alternative act. Very few people were in attendance and the late timing doesn’t help either. I mean, some people do work in the morning. I know Brian and me are at work right now.

Paramount Styles was brilliant. Great show, good tunes, and good energy from the band. I’ll have to check the video when I get home to see how it came out. Of course, I may just decide to sleep when I get home.

Tonight will be night two of the run. I’m guessing it will be very late again since I think there are three opening bands scheduled at Hell’s Kitchen with a 9 O’Clock start. Why not make it a 8 O’clock start and then Paramount Styles won’t be going on at 1 or so. That’s my best guess so far. Tonight will be very late…If all goes, well I’ll hit Anacortes on Friday night as well.

Paramount Styles 1-21-09 Night One

January 22nd, 2009 zeus163 No comments

I noticed the following article in this weeks Seattle Weekly on my way to the Paramount Styles show last night. So, I was happy that the band was being talked about a little in Seattle. I’ll have a night one part two in just a minute. I wanted to throw this up before I forgot to add it.

With the notable exceptions of Fugazi’s Guy Picciotto and Boss Hog’s Cristina Martinez, few figures in the mid-‘90s punk scene possessed the aggressive sexuality and disarming stage charisma that Girls Against Boys’ Scott McCloud had in spades. With GVSB on hiatus for the most part (they still play random club dates from time to time), McCloud has turned that magnetic energy towards more contemplative, down-tempo territory with his new project, Paramount Styles. McCloud and GVSB took a spiritual and fiscal beating at the hands of the major label system, and the scars and wisdom that came with it are on full display on their debut, Failure American Style. Blessedly, it’s more heartrending than hateful, with McCloud relaying vivid tales about drunks, whores and dastardly music business people in his trademark husky growl. Uncharted territory? Certainly not, but it’s not without poignant potency.

Die Welle

January 21st, 2009 zeus163 No comments

the-waveI know, I know. I said I was going to get going on my site and I really haven’t. I’ve had all sorts of ideas floating around my head to go on about, but I haven’t. Yet.

Last week I was browsing one of my many Internet sites that I frequently visit to get an idea of what new European TV shows or movies are out that I might be interested in.

I came across this post about a new movie called Die Welle. Since I kind of know German, I wondered if it was based on the novel The Wave and sure enough it is. It is a new German remake of the film. I guess students in Germany read this book as part of their studies.

I read this book a few summers back and found it quite good. What is interesting is how little time it takes for the class to begin believing the new ideals that are presented by the teacher. Here is a summary I found on the book since I’m too lame to come up with one on my own:

The Wave is based on a true incident that occured in a high school history class in Palo Alto, California, in 1969.The powerful forces of group pressure that pervaded many historic movements such as Nazism are recreated in the classroom when history teacher Burt Ross introduces a “new” system to his students. And before long “The Wave,” with its rules of “strength through discipline, community, and action, ” sweeps from the classroom through the entire school. And as most of the students join the movement, Laurie Saunders and David Collins recognize the frightening momentum of “The Wave” and realize they must stop it before it’s too late.

High school history teacher Burt Ross was known for his innovative teaching methods. When it came time to study World War II and the effect Hitler had on the youth of Germany, Ross decides to show his students what it was like to be under group pressure. He starts a movement in his class stressing discipline and solidarity, and before he knows it, ‘The Wave’ becomes a cult that sweeps through the entire school–and trying to control it as well. Has he created a monster? This story is based on a true incident.

“Wave” is based on a true incident that occurred when a teacher conducted an experiment dealing with group pressure in his classes.

To get even more information on the book, you can head over to the wikipedia site.

I watched the German version of the The Wave last week and it is amazing how fast the students become united in the belief that their group is the right way. The kids in the movie joke about the Third Reich, but in the end, the realization that they too began to follow these new ways amazes and stuns them. The movie has a more dramatic ending then the book does. The movie is available in Germany on blu-ray even, but I noticed it doesn’t have subtitles. Darn. I’ll have to wait until a Region 1 release comes out dubbed and hopefully with a German audio track and subtitles.

Sleepy Eyes of Death This Saturday 1/17/09

January 15th, 2009 zeus163 No comments

Here’s a clip I did of Sleepy Eyes of Death about a year ago when they were opening for Foals at the Chop Suey. As always be patient at first. It will play. Sometimes immediately, sometimes not!

This text will be replaced

Brian is going to pick me up at the ferry for Saturday’s show which is a good thing as it saves me a tremendous amount of money since I can generally find free parking in Bainbridge. I’m looking forward to the show. The Stranger has them in their recommended and has this to say about them:

our men stand onstage among a mess of wires, synthesizers, drums, and guitars. With a heavy blast of fog and well-timed flashes of multicolored spotlights, the lines between man and machine become blurred. Layers of fast-paced keyboard stack on top of fuzzy guitar and airtight drumming. The beat buzzes below your feet and threatens to knock you down. You’ll walk away intact, but your idea of what a live show should be will never be the same.

If that doesn’t excite you, then I don’t know what will!

I need to work on my site!

January 13th, 2009 zeus163 2 comments

OK. Now that I got more than one video figured out (have to work on aspect ratio so that it doesn’t go into the side bar menus), I can finally get down to more business here. I’m not sure how come it wouldn’t really work for me earlier and I did use this method previously to try and get it to work, but this time, it did. So, go figure! I do know for slower sites that some of these videos won’t play instantly, so I guess I should warn you of that. These are also not full quality videos due to space considerations and bandwidth speeds.

More coming soon. In fact, later tonight, but it won’t have video involved. At least, I don’t think so.

Glasvegas tomorrow night…t minus 23…22…

January 9th, 2009 zeus163 No comments

In anticipation for tomorrow night’s gig, I have a video of their’s that I found online. I was hoping for Geraldine, but Daddy’s Gone is a cool song as well.
Ugh. I can’t seem to get another video to embed properly. I got one to work from my own hosting, but when I try to add another, it plays the same letterman video and then disables it from the proper post even though I’ve correctly changed the right file name to be linked. Ugh.

Paramount Styles 1/21, 1/22, and 1/23 in Washington

January 7th, 2009 zeus163 No comments

paramount-styles-hells-kitchen-1-22-09 I’m not as in tune to music as I used to be. At one time, I tried to keep up with everything that was happening, but as we know, that is very hard to do. It shold be easier now with the Internet, but I find that I know less about newer bands than I used to. Odd. It should be easier.

May 1996. At least, I think it was May 1996. Therapy? were scheduled to play the Crocodile Cafe opening for Girls Against Boys. I was so excited for this show since I had only seen Therapy? once before at the Off Ramp opening for Swervedriver back in February 1994. That was a show (Medicine opened I think). My original thinking when this show was announced was to leave as soon as Therapy? was finished so that I could catch a good night’s sleep. My friend Scott told me I should stay and catch Girls Against Boys. I did. I’m glad I did.

I caught Girls Against Boys several times on their way through Seattle, but since they have been on hiatus for a while and the shows they did play weren’t remotely close to me, I kind of lost track of what the band was up to. I was browsing the Sunset Tavern page and saw mention for Paramount Styles with Girls Against Boys in parenthesis, meaning that band had something to do with them. I saw that it was Scott McCloud from Girls Against Boys fame and was instantly interested. I zipped over to his myspace site and listened to some tunes. Liked what I heard. Zipped over to Amazon.com and purchased his Cd as a download. Great stuff. I will buy a physical copy when I see him play.

Paramount Styles plays these dates in Washington:
1/21/09 Sunset Tavern, Seattle
1/22/09 Hell’s Kitchen, Tacoma
1/23/09 Brown Lantern, Anacortes

I’d like to hit all three, but I’m shooting for two and if I can pull off three, that would be sweet. I’m going to contact him to see what his audio/visual policy is and see if he’ll let me film. I’m such a dork. I know.

Here is his myspace site: Paramount Styles.

Some good shows for January. Now if I could just find flyers for these shows. That would be even cooler.

Glasvegas January 10th Chop Suey

January 7th, 2009 zeus163 No comments

Here is the full performance of Geraldine by Glasvegas on David Letterman from January 5, 2009:

Error- You must upgrade your Adobe Flash Player to see this video, upgrade here.

glasvegas-chop-sueyI like live music. I always have and apparently, I always will. Even as I creep closer to 38, I still want to go and see bands play. Of course, living in Poulsbo, really doesn’t help this situation at all. Having to wait for a ferry or driving around can really take the steam out of someone. I also don’t seem to be able to recover quite as quick as I used to from very little sleep.

Luckily, the first concert of the year takes place on a Saturday night. Yeah. I can sleep in after it (I hope). Glasvegas takes me back a bit in their style of music. They remind me of early Jesus and Mary Chain especially with the stand-up drummer. The songs are catchy and quite good. I’m even more excited after having caught their David Letterman appearance earlier this week playing Geraldine.

I hope it is a good one. Carl Barat used to be in Libertines UK and was then in some other band I think. I had a chance to see Libertines in their one and only Seattle appearance years ago, but for some reason didn’t go. One of those shows that I wonder why I didn’t go to. More later on this one…

I’m A Download Junkie…

January 5th, 2009 zeus163 2 comments

Anybody that knows me, knows that I spend way too much time on the computer and on the Internet. I use the Internet for watching TV, sharing live music/video with friends, and a way to learn more about technology and what other users are doing with it. I use a lot of bandwidth because I choose too. I guess I’m an addict and we all know that the first step to recovery is admitting it.

Comca$t is our Internet/cable TV provider. They are fine and get the job done, but what bugs me the most is that this is my most expensive bill a month and it isn’t even a necessity–I’m sure we could debate this as I think Internet is a necessity, but honestly, if I had to choose between living in a house full of garbage or without running water, or not having my toilets working, I’d skip the broadband and go with having my trash emptied. taking a nice hot shower and having the toilets work just fine.

Comca$t came through with their yearly price increase. Jeez. Just great. The economy sucks, gas was at an all time high, and still Comca$t raises rates. Comca$t is making millions and they still raise prices to make sure they can continue to give me premium services or so they say–I did cancel HBO (no more The Wire, Sopranos, or Rome) . Comca$t has been promising more HD stations in the PNW for sometime and some areas have it, but not all. I’m unfortunately, not in one of those areas. I want more HD. Once you’ve experienced true HD, it’s very hard to watch anything else. So, even though it is only like 8 new stations, that is 8 stations in HD that I didn’t have before.

Do you ever watch those Comca$tic commercials about how Comca$t shows more HD than any other provider? Ever get the chance to look at that fine print? I’m sorry that I don’t live in Philadelphia or in an area that Comca$t is threatened by FIOS or another serious competitor. Comca$t may have Ondemand HD shows which is where they come up with more HD choices than the competitors, but truthfully, I’m not a fan of Ondemand and rarely, if ever, choose to go that route. That’s Comca$t’s way of trying to lead you to believe that they truly have more, but when it all comes down to it, I want more stations, not archived HD shows/(crappy) movies to choose from. That’s where it is at. People want more choices, so let’s add more stations and if you must keep Ondemand, then do so. Let’s get the digital switchover going and get it done!

I use the Internet. I’ve kind of embraced the technology that is out there and use it. I’m not one of those people, however, that runs torrents 24/7 or has to download anything and everything. Maybe 6-7 years ago when I first received broadband with @home, but I’ve realized I don’t need everything and seriously, where would I store it all?

december-usage1As we know Comcast is now limiting users to 250 gigs a month. That’s quite a bit and most months I probably wouldn’t come close to touching it, but when I’m not at work for extended periods of time, I download more. It’s fun. This winter break I stayed in more than usual due to all of the snow we had for our area. I watched some new anime shows, caught up on some British TV shows, and heard/read about some new bands from MP3 blogs–that led me to spending money on new releases. If I like it, I’ll support it.

How is a user supposed to keep track of their WAN usage to know if they are close to a 250 gig limit? Especially if you are like our family that has a Wii, PS3, and 4 computer all connected to Comca$t’s pipe? Comcast implemented this barrier, but at this point in time don’t have anything truly set in place that can give you accurate measurements. No, I don’t want anything put out by McAfee and there are several freeware programs that monitor one computers usuage. But then those programs also count usuage as transferring files around the network, so what does that look like for the Home Server in the lcoset downstairs? So, I’ve been measuring my usage on my router with DD-WRT. I’ve been using DD-WRT since last year at this time, but didn’t know that you could see your traffic usage like the picture above. Sweet Caroline. What an awesome feature. Would it be so hard for Comca$t to have something like that?

Look closely at the screenshot. I grabbed tons of stuff last month. From helping Andreas torrent some of his homemade videos, to torrenting some concerts that I filmed with permission from bands to thier fans, anime, and music. I don’t think there is anything wrong with this. I don’t run it 24/7, but I want to make sure everyone gets there fair share. I also watch British TV shows this way. I try and grab the 720p versions of the shows on the newsgroups. I don’t think there is anything wrong with downloading a TV show. I used to be able to record TV shows, so why can’t I download them and watch them. I’m not selling them, nor do I try to profit from them in anyway. Not everyone that downloads from the Internet is trying to screw somebody over. If a show isn’t out in 720p, than I download the much smaller xvid file. How else would I have watched Packed to the Rafters from Australia. I’m anxiously awaiting the second season.

Another thing from the screenshot is that you’ll notice the first half of December is missing. I had some router issues and my router died. I had to replace it and lost the first half of the months info. My bad. So, I hope I didn’t download more than 80 gigs before I got the router back on line, or I could be over 250 gigs. We shall wait and see.

Wow. I hadn’t intended this post to come across quite like this and perhaps I’ll edit it more over the next few days. While it may seem that I hate Comca$t, I truly don’t. I’m just not a fan of the choices they make from throttling users, to forging torrent packets (and not admitting it), and not offering the same services in the same cities.
